About the Temple

A group of 9 ancient Nava Brahama temples built in the Badami Chalukya style, located at the meeting point of the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers. The Goddess Jogulamba temple here is one of the 18 Shakti Peethas.

History: The temples were built between the 6th and 7th centuries by the Badami Chalukya kings. The sculptures here are considered among the finest examples of early Chalukyan art.

Significance: Alampur is known as the 'Kashi of the South' and is a prime Shakti Peetha. It is also called 'Dakshina Kashi'. The Jogulamba temple is one of the 18 Shakti Peethas where the upper teeth (or upper lip) of Sati are believed to have fallen.
