About the Temple

Situated on the banks of the Godavari River, this is one of the most important Rama temples in South India. The temple's main idol of Lord Rama is in a standing posture holding a bow and arrow.

History: The temple was built in the 17th century by Kancherla Gopanna (Bhadrachala Ramadasu), a great devotee of Lord Rama and a revenue official under the Qutb Shahi dynasty. He used government funds to build the temple and was imprisoned for it, where Lord Rama came to pay his debt.

Significance: The temple is intimately connected with the life of Bhadrachala Ramadasu, whose devotional songs (keertanas) are famous. The temple offers Ramalinga Darshan on Rama Navami.
