About the Temple

A magnificent Vijayanagara-era temple in Anantapur district, famous for its stunning 9-meter tall monolithic Nandi statue (one of the largest in India), the hanging pillar architectural marvel, and exquisite Vijayanagara mural paintings on the ceilings. The temple features a massive open-air dance hall (Nritya Mandapa) with beautifully carved pillars.

History: Built in 1530 CE during the Vijayanagara empire under King Achutaraya, by the brothers Viranna and Virupanna. According to legend, this is the place where Jatayu fell after being wounded by Ravana. Lord Rama said le pakshi (rise, bird) to Jatayu, giving the town its name Lepakshi.

Significance: Famous for: 1) 9-meter monolithic Nandi - one of the largest in the world, 2) The hanging pillar that does not touch the ground, 3) Largest Nandi carved from a single rock, 4) Exquisite Vijayanagara frescoes, 5) 27-pillar dance hall, 6) Sita's footprint on a rock.
